MATT HUYNH is a comic creator and illustrator based in Sydney, Australia.
Huynh began self-publishing to put more of the kind of comics that he wanted to read and see on the shelves. His diversity of genres and processes, from surrealist fantasy to polemical essays, community collaborations and biography, have garnered accolades from a broad audience, including Berlin’s Young Illustrator’s Award. His is shortlisted in 2010 Spirit of Youth Award's Visual Arts category and the 2009 Creative Sydney Festival named him one of the most innovative contributors to Sydney’s culture. He was awarded the inaugural Design NSW Travelling Scholarship to pursue a worldwide professional development trip to train and work in residence under his greatest influences and inspirations.
Huynh strives to enthuse Australian comics identity by showcasing work across unexpected contexts, from a storefront display for Incu Clothing’s fashion boutique to a pop-up art festival at Cabra-Vale Leisure Centre and an exhibition in a Newtown boxing gym. Beyond comics, Huynh has explored new media and public art with the Popperbox artists’ collective. Huynh is currently developing a graphic novel and continues to practice as an illustrator.
