Help us trial the Sirenus Emergency Warning System

Project Description

Finalist - 2011 telstra innovation challenge

Introduction

People in disaster zones have a desperate need for localised and timely information. Each individual is a potential source of information, information that can be critically important to others in their community and emergency organisations. Current means of communication utilise 19th century technology (e.g. radio, telephones and sirens) to send general alerts that are often out-of-date or irrelevant.

Present-day and emerging technologies, such as the Internet and social media, provide information that is scattered across a number of sources with varying levels of reliability. Recent events have indicated that people are increasingly turning to social media as a source of information in disaster situations.

But who has the time to monitor these and sort out the good from the bad, the vital warning from the rumour or hoax?

Sirenus is developing a computer network that will take information on a disaster threat from a variety of sources including official, mainstream and social media, and combine this with crowd-sourced information from its own users and subscribers. It will sort, categorise and rate this information and then deliver information to users automatically and immediately via the Smartphone, Web, Social Media (Facebook, Twitter), email and SMS (text message). Users will have real-time, localised and personalised information at their fingertips.

The Project

We are planning to run a trial of the Sirenus Emergency Warning System in the Adelaide Hills region to address bushfires during the 2011/12 fire danger season. We have the software and servers ready to go but we need a minimum of $6,000 to cover other cost of the trial including public liability insurance. With this money and our own resources we test out the processes and technology we have developed for Sirenus. At the same time this will provide a vital information service to the residents of the Adelaide Hills to help them to say safe during this bushfire danger season.

In return for your support we are offering a range of valuable rewards that will both help you to protect you, your family and your property as well as a few rewards to thanks you for you support.

The Adelaide Hills are one of the highest bushfire danger regions in the world. It is only a matter of time before bushfires as dangerous as those encountered in Victoria on Black Saturday and the Ash Wednesday bushfires of the 1980s will once again threaten lives and property in this idyllic region. Those living, working or relaxing in the Adelaide Hills constantly live with the threat of catastrophic bushfire throughout the summer months. They have an ever present need for up-to-date, reliable and relevant information to allow them to make decisions for their safety.
