Around Winston Street is a series of
photos taken around the block from where I live in Shepparton. It offers an
insight into life in regional Australia, and documents characters from my
immediate community. The project came about after I took photos of a
thunderstorm near my home and was surprised at how foreign the shots looked.
Since then I have been exploring my neighbourhood, discovering amazing
characters along the way, and have curated a series that I believe captures the
quirkiness, love and hope that exist here.
The photos were exhibited in Sydney as a part of the Head On Photo Festival 2011. It was an amazing experience, and I’m now committed to pursuing my creative photography more. It encourages me to think differently, to see more of what is in front of me than might ordinarily be seen and translate that into an image. I like the formula of keeping the work that I do close to home or along the way and pushing what I am capable of achieving within this framework. So I’ll continue to expand on this theme by working on portraits as much as reportage. Portraits from around the block!
I’m excited to announce that Around Winston Street has just been accepted for exhibition at the No Vacancy Galley in Federation Square, Melbourne. The exhibition will be held from the 23rd January until the 5th February 2012. It has given me the opportunity to develop more as a photographer.
I can’t wait to take this series (and myself!) to Melbourne. It will be a rare chance for me to indulge completely in soaking up the creative atmosphere of the city, and photographing as much of it as I can. I will be in attendance at the exhibition, so pop in and say hi. The gallery is private and includes the artist (me!) covering gallery expenses, so I’m hoping to pre-sell photos from the exhibition, as digital photos, printed photos and framed photos.
If you can help out in anyway, I’d be grateful, as its a private gallery which includes gallery fees and expenses. (I must be mad!) But I'm really excited about people becoming involved through this project and supporters will be updated through my Facebook page.
Thank you, Serana Hunt
