Project Description

In the historic Fremantle Moores Building in late February 2012, I will be exhibiting 24 photos, each representing the 24 books of Homer's epic The Odyssey. Each photo will be accompanied by a single quote from each book. All photos have been shot on medium format film on a Hasselblad 500C/M. The photos will be printed on a large scale, measuring 1.5x1.5 metres each to truly capture the epic nature of Homer’s text. The project seeks to recreate and capture core human experiences, emotions and turmoil reflected both in the epic poem of yesteryear and in the everyday travails of people globally, where the past and the present co-exist within and alongside one another simultaneously.

This project began over 4 years ago whilst enjoying an English breakfast with researcher and literature academic Steven Businovski, watching the sun rise on King Street in the city of Perth. Sunrise was always the time when we had our discussions. I still till this day remember the moment when he optimistically spoke the words "I have this idea…" It's amazing how an idea, no matter how big or small, can affect the direction one takes in life. When the public finally gets to see this idea come to life, it will be 5 years to the day since I sat in that King Street apartment, full of eggs, HP sauce and hope.

In order for this exhibition to do justice to Homer’s original text, I am asking you to help me raise $5000. This money will be used for printing and framing. The cost of printing and framing 1.5x1.5 metre photographs to emulate the epic nature of the text is overwhelming and goes way beyond my limited budget. It is my hope that you can help me achieve my goal and be apart of this exciting project. It is my dream that when this show goes ahead in late February, 2012, that the audience will be mesmerised and in awe, much like audiences would have been in ancient times when listening to the bard tell the original tale.

I have been taking photos for over 10 years now and have a passion for film photography. Unfortunately film is becoming increasingly harder to find, buy and develop and so it is with great regret and sadness to say that this may be my second and last exhibition dedicated solely to film.
