My Exodus: Escape from a toxic religious cult
Project Description
I had loving parents, lots of friends, a great supportive social structure that was encompassed by the love and grace of God.
Or so I believed.
For the first 25 years of my life up until mid-2008 I was in an Australian fundamentalist Christian revival cult. I was led to believe I was privileged to have been born into that church and up until my late teens and early 20's I fully believed that. But then I started questioning, started thinking for myself and started to be more critical about what I had been told was the truth.
It started off as something niggling in the back of my mind, something that didn't feel right but time after time I quashed that feeling as doubts and the lure of Satan trying to pull my away from my faith. But it didn't go away. It grew and grew until for a period of several years leading up to my departure in 2008 I was often tormented within myself trying to make sense of the world and reconcile logic and reason with what the church was telling me.
It took me to some very dark places where not even suicide was an option for escape.
I have decided to write a book about my experiences growing up in, leaving and recovering from that cult including my thoughts on religion, spirituality and philosophy as well as mental illness as I have attributed my depression to my upbringing and the spiritual abuse and trauma caused by the cult.
I started a blog in January 2010 called My Exodus which is a precursor to the book I plan to write, however in order to write the book I will need to take time off work - something I'm not in a financial position to do. My Exodus is also the working title of my book - I haven't yet decided on the actual book title.
This book will not only be of interest to the general public but I believe will be an important tool to the many others who are firmly stuck in toxic religion and need a helping hand.
I need your help and support so I can take a few months of unpaid leave and write my story.
I'm offering 100 pre-order copies of the book for $25 each as well as five $500 financial supporter placements who will get a mention in the acknowledgements of the preface of my book.

I'm also a semi-professional photographer though most of my photos I take for my own enjoyment. My partner and I like to go for long drives in the country finding nice landscapes to capture.
As the owner and author of six blogs who has guest posted on half a dozen others I have had plenty of experience in writing and publishing content. English was my favourite and best subject at school.
