I Rocked The Boat
Project Description
In March this year, four young Australian guys will be driving from Hobart to Norway on biodiesel, without stopping at a petrol station. As part of that trip, the team is building a boat (also to be run on biodiesel) that will travel from Darwin to Singapore, island hopping between East Timor, Indonesia and Malaysia. The challenge will be to jump ashore and source the fuel needed to get to the next destination. Biodiesel can be made from any animal or vegetable oil, and the team will ensure that only used waste oil (from restaurants and other oil users) is collected: oil that would otherwise be thrown out. Along the way, the team aims to visit and showcase sustainability initiatives in the region, and present them to the world through a generation-Y perspective.
The boat will carry the team of four, Oscar, Bob, Justin and Chuck, as well as a Director of Photography, a biodiesel processor, supplies, water and radio equipment. Whilst support will never be far off, the trip will be 20 days at sea, coupled with land forays into locations where English is not spoken, tensions are high, resources are scarce and time is of the essence.
At the conclusion of the journey, the boat will be donated to a rebuilding tsunami-affected community with the aid of local charities, along with instructions of how to make biodiesel and the processor needed to create it for years to come.
The journey will be compiled into a documentary which is at this stage airing in the second half of 2011.
The project has the support of both the Australian and Indonesian authorities, including the coast guard and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. What we need now is your support! Help us get there.
We will be spending the money raised here on buying the right second hand engine, fitting it to our boat and making sure it runs on our fuel. In addition, there are parts and materials that need to be bought, as well as welding materials for Chuck.
