Help MoneyKat (Omar + Mighty Joe) make 1st album!

Project Description

In October, 2010, Mighty Joe and I completed a hugely successful Indonesian tour and decided to form an international hip-hop duo named MoneyKat. We have been sporadic collaborators since we met at university in Santa Cruz, California, and this tour confirmed to us that we have a special musical partnership. We have very different styles, accents and tones but are focused on bringing soulful, personal, socially conscious and poetic hip-hop to ears and minds. If you look at the footage of our tour below, I am sure you will agree.

As you might also know, life can be tough for independent musicians, especially in terms of creating world class product on a small budget. We are determined to record an album in California and Seattle, USA,  and thought this online fundraiser would be an organic way of helping fund the album (studio time, hiring musicians, production, mastering etc). Whether you contribute $1 or $1000 (!), every little bit is appreciated. We truly believe that we have something special here and with your help will be able to create an amazing and unique album.

Help us fuel the fire! Much love,

-Omar Musa

He released his debut full length album World Goes to Pieces in 2010. Joe Kim A.K.A. Mighty Joe was born and raised in the East Bay, California. Long the breeding ground for independent hip hop artists, the Bay Area's street smart, often socially conscious sensibilities are represented powerfully in his music. His complex, poetic rhymes are reminiscent of Talib Kweli and an era of hip-hop often thought to have been lost. What began as an immersion in music as a means of expression evolved into an avenue for education and critical commentary about the struggle of the disenfranchised. This interest in social empowerment led to him earning a degree in Psychology and Social Work at the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 2006, his song "What If" was featured on the soundtrack for the internationally released video game, College Hoops 2K7. The featured song brought him recognition from all over the U.S.A and in the UK. He has since recorded with diverse rock veteran Geoff Stanfield (Sun Kil Moon, Black Lab), Bay Area producers Germ and Redell, Australian slam poetry champion Omar Musa and Marc Griffin of pop-rock band 2am Club. Mighty Joe released his debut album "The Golden LP" in 2010 and went on to tour in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
