Elsewhere Magazine
Project Description
Do you dream of an Australian magazine that supports new talent and celebrates established voices? Do you long to read an interview or feature longer than 1000 words? Do you believe in critical engagement with art and media that goes beyond the three-and-a-half-star horizon? Would you rather see a gorgeous photo essay than another knock-kneed model hawking aspirational threads? And would you like to find all of the above within the covers of the one publication?
That's where ELSEWHERE Magazine comes in.
We believe there is a gap in the Australian market for such a magazine, and we believe that magazine is ELSEWHERE. We envision a bi-monthly magazine that steps outside the "time sensitive" realm of editorial driven by PR and instead provides thought-provoking and entertaining content that can become timeless.

Yes, "content" is a hollow catch-phrase in this era of new media, and yet, we still find ourselves longing for a magazine with genuine and compelling, well, content that goes beyond the usual parade of touring artists, interviews geared towards selling ticket sales, fashion shoots in the name of aspirational editorial, and reviews that are little more than buyers' guides.
We want to - and feel we can - create a magazine to treasure; a publication that looks good and yet doesn't insult your intelligence, a magazine with articles you can return to inside a cover that you can leave on your coffee table.

We have a team of designers, photographers, writers, illustrators and editors raring to go - and we know there are readers waiting - all we need is the funding.
The beauty of Fundbreak means that if we don't reach our fundraising target, we will cry deeply, but you will not lose a cent - your pledge will be refunded in full. (The target we have set is a minimum amount that will cover our first six months, during which we hope to become financially stable. If we exceed the target, we won't complain!)
Where will your money go if we do reach our target? Aside from the mundane realities of print media - i.e. printing it - ELSEWHERE is committed to paying its contributors.
Too often, freelance writers and artists are expected to work for free, promised "over 100,000 readers", or "great exposure", or "a brilliant opportunity" as 'payment'. We'd like to ensure our contributors receive all of the above (ok, maybe for the time being we'll settle for 10,000 readers, or even 100) as well as actual payment for their work.

It will also allow us to pay our small but perfectly formed editorial and design staff, so that they won't have to work on ELSEWHERE in their spare time/on the dunny/at 3am on a Wednesday night.
It will mean you don't have to suffer through pages of chirpy advertorial, and it will mean the magazine has a modest safety net to support us through the first few issues before our product is strong enough to calm the nerves of skittish advertisers.
We want ELSEWHERE itself to be the reward for pledging financial support. We could offer you bells and whistles and free steak knives, but we want to create a magazine that you will love; a publication that you, as a supporter, can feel proud of.
Yes, we could take longer getting this started, spend countless hours filling out grant applications, sell ads to turf-management companies and shift our kidneys on the black market, and eventually release a photocopied newsletter called ELSEWHERE in 2017, but we want ELSEWHERE to become a reality sooner rather than later. We know you want a magazine you can sink your teeth into, and you shouldn't have to wait. We want to make it happen in 2011.
Together, we CAN make this happen.
